Con la Guitarra en el estribo...3. De un delicado rincón de palacio

  A delicate corner of palace

By Rubén Joelson

The first edition of “La Rhétorique des Dieux” pieces for lute by Denis Gauletier  published on 1652. It´s written in twelve parts, one for each greek mode, this does not mean that the compositions are written on the aforementioned modes, however, many of the included parts make a reference to the greek mythology, like the illustrations made by Nanteuil, Bosse and Le Sueur.

On the first illustrations it can be noticed three figures, perhaps Athena with a cane interlaced by two serpents, I can not identify the other deity that is holding a sheet music, in which can notice the title of the work, "La Rhétorique des Dieux" in front of them a lutenist,  I guess that it represents the own Gaultier , how attentively he read the sheet music that the right hand of the figure, that I identify as Athene is pointing out.

In the following illustrations and prints, I found more figures and allegories of Greek and Latin mythology.

They parade through the play, Phaeton, Minerva, Mercury, Achilles, Ulysses, and so on.

This, that it encloses allegories, symbologies for connoisseur or not, presupposes a bigger construction. Yes, forms a part of “style brisé”; the "broken style” would be a instrumental practice for lutenist, guitar players and later on for the keyboard instruments: Harpsichord, Virginal, Spinet, ect.

I say it forms a part of, a greater construction, the customs, the thematic repertory of the epoch of Gaultier, the encode eloquence of the music of François Couperin or Jean Philippe Rameau, the grace and elegance of the dance music of Lully. The grave and sophisticated Opera of Marc-Antoine Charpentier

A building, a castle, a palace, or a fortress, served for the shining of Louis XIV “Le Roi Soleil". A construction that has to have its foundation on the troubadours of Provence, the medieval minstrels, like the goliardos. It's roots and its foundations on the polyphony of Perotin, Machault and Josquin de Pres.

For Luis XIV, music was a part of its government, its tool and its splendor;  It  was also a mirror of its policy and influence.

On the palace of Versailles about two thousand five hundred people lived toghether. And they needed a coding for their passions and emotions, for a protocol, that started with the awakeing of the king, who start his day listening to Robert de Visée in the theorbo, the lute or the guitar.

“La Grande Ecurie” It was a set that accompanied the king to almost all outdoor activities: Procession, hunt, and strolls to the open-air.

For balls, banquets, concerts, and the opera were the "Vingt-quatre Violons" and "La Chapelle" for religious services

King Louis lived in a constant theatrical performance, the Louvre and Versailles were a framework for the representation of the sophisticated protocol; A complex label that will cover  his long reign, since he governed without a prime minister in 1661 until his death in 1715.

I want to dwell on a fact.

On 1670 Claude Jacquet, organist and Mason “therefore a man of contacts and skills” presents  Anna Elisabeth, her five year old daughter, that delighted the audience with their singing skills and harpsichord

Thereafter she became a whim of Madame Montespan, the king's favorite. He encouraged her to cultivate the gift that "nature would have given her”, and encouraged her to move to Versailles where Madame Montespan, would have raised her as one of her children.

At this time teachers who admired his skills named it “La petite merveille”   or “La merveille de notre siècle”.

In the court, in the Dauphin residence or in the chambers of Madame Montespan, Elizabeth's early works were presented which they were dramatic pieces like a small opera or  a pastoral. She remained in Versalles court until 1684, later she went to live to Paris with her husband Marin de la Guerre the organist dessert of the Sainte-Chapelle. In Paris she could continue her musical career, giving clases and concerts, this were sought by a growing   audience of   musicians, and for the masters of the time. Besides, enjoying the patronage of the king for whom always showed her gratitude, dedicating not with little emotion her works

After the opening of one of his operas in 1690 the “Mercure Galant” pointed her as " the shadow of Lully" or like "The most prominent musician and composer" to this praises it would join the ones made by Georges de Lalande  pointings to Elisabeth Jacquet as "so great or greater than Couperin and Chambonnières"

Around this time,  will befall on her,  the loss of his father,  his brother and the deaths of her husband and son. After these tragedies she retired from public life and from the music.

She appears in 1707 with "Six Sonates pour le viollon et pour le clavecin" a mature work and innovative proposals in France. In this book the harmonic proposals of an Italianate style and the ornamental wealth, the grace and French elegance is synthesized. This work like the ones above is dedicated to King Louis XIV “she will outlived him fourteen years”. The work of Elisabeth is a contribution to the French sonata, belongs to the long evening of aristocratic style, of "Le Roi Solelil" is also Jaques du Phly and Joseph Nicolas Pancrace Royer are the synthesis of it, in France the style that announces the appearance of Hayden or Mozart . The highlights of his work; the French cantatas, his work for harpsichord of 1687 and of course the violin sonatas with harpsichord obbligato of 1707. I have had the pleasure of reading and transcribing some work of Elisabeth Jacquet in it I found the intimate emotions, the French elegance and eloquence, the rapture of Italian music and the search for intimacy and the delicacy. Especially the not measured  prelude. The works reflect the spontaneity, the spirit of makeshift fantasy, that it called both the astonishment among teachers of his time.

In 1732 Titon du Tillet writes in "Le Parnasse Français” the wonderful facility to play fantasies and preludes with spontaneity. Elisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre (1665-1720) belongs to a lineage unjustly forgotten: that of composers. On September 1715, at the age of seventy-seven Louis XIV died; Leaving palaces, gardens, libraries and institutions. One such institution was the long and vast mansion of his music, immeasurable construction of composers, instruments, books and knowledge. The dilated palace of the Sun King music has a subtle, and delicate corner, the music of Elisabeth  Jacquet.
